This paper presents in edited form the panel discussion at the United Nations, New York, held on 15 July 2008, organized by the UNODA and the Office of the Special Representative for the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, in collaboration with the International Action Network on Small Arms and the Government of Belgium. It captures the introductions to the programme by Radhika Coomaraswamy, the special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, and Sergio Duarte, the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and also contains the presentations made by Christiane Agboton Johnson on the work to retrain youth in the conflict-prone area of Casamance in Senegal and by Amanda Millard on the results of a research project on the impact of small arms borne by children in situations of conflict and peace.
